Core Basic Parameters of Diesel Generator Sets
Diesel generator sets are widely used in emergency backup power, industrial production, and field operations. Understanding their core basic parameters is crucial for selecting the right equipment to meet specific power needs. Below are the key parameters explained in detail:
1. Power-Related Parameters
Power is the most fundamental parameter of a diesel generator set, directly determining its ability to supply electricity to electrical equipment. Common power indicators include:
- Rated Power (Prime Power): Refers to the maximum continuous power that the generator set can output under specified operating conditions (such as standard ambient temperature, atmospheric pressure, and relative humidity) for an unlimited duration. It is usually expressed in kilowatts (kW) or kilovolt-amperes (kVA), with the conversion relationship being 1 kVA ≈ 0.8 kW (considering a typical power factor of 0.8). This parameter is suitable for long-term continuous operation scenarios, such as power supply for industrial production lines.
- Standby Power (Emergency Power): Represents the maximum power that the generator set can provide for a short period (generally no more than 12 hours within 24 hours, with a cumulative annual operation time not exceeding 500 hours) in emergency situations. It is typically 10%-15% higher than the rated power. For example, a generator set with a rated power of 100 kW may have a standby power of 110-115 kW. This parameter is designed for emergency backup scenarios, such as power supply for hospitals, data centers, and residential areas during grid outages.
- Power Factor (PF): Indicates the ratio of active power (used for actual work, in kW) to apparent power (total power supplied by the generator, in kVA) of the generator set. The standard power factor for most diesel generator sets is 0.8 (lagging), which is compatible with most inductive loads (such as motors, transformers, and air conditioners). Some high-performance generator sets can be customized with a power factor of 1.0 to adapt to resistive loads (such as electric heaters and lighting equipment).
2. Voltage and Frequency Parameters
Voltage and frequency are critical indicators to ensure the normal operation of electrical equipment, as different devices have strict requirements for these two parameters.
- Rated Voltage: The standard voltage output by the generator set under rated operating conditions, commonly divided into low voltage and high voltage. Low-voltage generator sets usually have rated voltages of 220 V (single-phase) and 380 V (three-phase), suitable for small and medium-sized electrical equipment such as household appliances, small motors, and office equipment. High-voltage generator sets (above 1000 V) have rated voltages like 6.3 kV, 10.5 kV, etc., and are mainly used for large-scale industrial projects, such as power supply for factories and power grids. The voltage regulation rate of a high-quality generator set is usually within ±1%, ensuring stable voltage output even when the load changes.
- Rated Frequency: The number of alternating current cycles output by the generator set per second, measured in hertz (Hz). The global mainstream rated frequencies are 50 Hz and 60 Hz. Most countries and regions in Asia, Europe, and Africa adopt 50 Hz, while North America, some countries in South America, and parts of the Middle East use 60 Hz. The frequency stability of the generator set is crucial; the allowable frequency deviation is generally ±0.5 Hz. Unstable frequency can cause malfunctions of electrical equipment, such as abnormal operation of motors and inaccurate work of precision instruments.
3. Fuel Consumption Parameter
Fuel consumption directly affects the operating cost of the diesel generator set, making it an important consideration for users, especially for long-term operation scenarios.
- Specific Fuel Consumption (SFC): Defined as the amount of diesel fuel consumed by the generator set to output 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electrical energy under rated power and standard operating conditions, expressed in grams per kilowatt-hour (g/kWh). The specific fuel consumption of a high-performance diesel generator set is usually between 200-250 g/kWh. For example, a 100 kW generator set with a specific fuel consumption of 220 g/kWh will consume 22 kg of diesel per hour when operating at full load. Factors such as the efficiency of the diesel engine, the design of the fuel injection system, and the quality of diesel fuel will affect the specific fuel consumption. Choosing a generator set with low specific fuel consumption can significantly reduce long-term fuel costs.
4. Size and Weight Parameters
Size and weight are important for the transportation, installation, and placement of the diesel generator set, especially for mobile or space-constrained applications.
- Overall Dimensions: Usually expressed as length × width × height (in millimeters or inches), which determines the space required for installing the generator set. For example, a small 20 kW diesel generator set may have dimensions of 1500 mm × 800 mm × 1000 mm, while a large 500 kW generator set may be 4500 mm × 1800 mm × 2200 mm. When selecting, it is necessary to consider the size of the installation site to ensure that there is sufficient space for heat dissipation, maintenance, and operation.
- Dry Weight: The weight of the generator set without fuel, coolant, and lubricating oil, expressed in kilograms (kg) or pounds (lb). It is an important parameter for transportation and hoisting. Small generator sets (below 50 kW) may weigh 300-800 kg, which can be transported by ordinary trucks; large generator sets (above 500 kW) may weigh tens of thousands of kilograms, requiring special heavy-duty transportation vehicles and hoisting equipment. For mobile generator sets (equipped with trailers), the total weight (including the trailer) also needs to be considered to comply with road transportation weight limits.
5. Noise Level Parameter
With the increasing emphasis on environmental protection and noise control, the noise level of diesel generator sets has become a key parameter, especially for applications in residential areas, hospitals, and commercial centers.
Noise Level at Rated Power: Measured at a distance of 1 meter from the generator set (in free field conditions, without obstacles) when it is operating at rated power, expressed in decibels (dB(A)). The noise level of ordinary open-type diesel generator sets is usually 90-110 dB(A), which is equivalent to the noise of a heavy truck. To reduce noise pollution, soundproof generator sets are widely used; their noise level can be controlled at 60-75 dB(A), which is similar to the noise of normal conversation. The noise level is affected by the design of the soundproof enclosure, the damping of the engine, and the exhaust silencer. When selecting, it is necessary to choose a generator set with an appropriate
